This video is for “Baker Street,” a 1978 hit single written and performed by the recently deceased Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty (April 16, 1947 – January 4, 2011). Rafferty is best known for this song and “Right Down the Line,” as a solo artist, and “Stuck in the Middle” with Stealers Wheel, a band he co-founded in 1972. Stealers Wheel disbanded in 1975 and Gerry embarked on a solo career after the legal problems surrounding the band’s breakup were resolved.
“Baker Street” reached #1 in Australia, #2 in the US, #3 in the UK, and #9 in the Netherlands. Rafferty reportedly made, on average, £80,000 a year in royalties earned from the song.
“Baker Street” is named after the famous London street of the same name. The distinct saxophone solo on the record is played by Raphael Ravenscroft.
